We made 3D structures out of 2D flat paper by creating box folds and cutting windows, doors and sometimes chimneys. We had to follow instructions carefully and had a couple of practices, then we made our final pop-up. We had to think carefully about what was flat on the ground or floor and what was vertical or in the background. Accuracy was really important too - everything had to line up for it to work well.
